    Running Wheel

Running Wheel-music and lyrics Jon Clark © 2011 Row North Music

Take my mind running wheel, place me on that northern track

set your speed running wheel, close my coat, I feel the wind

You say they'll take me there, for times one day

then I'll find where I've been, just dreaming in the woods, just dreaming in the woods

I'm all packed running wheel, got my things close to me

all I left running wheel, was my hope and broken praise

With the time to look again, I'll figure out my loss

now I know to count my days, and clearer I can see, and clearer I can see

Through the snow running wheel, wind blown drifts some can't see

with your light running wheel, shine it out, those empty bars

Gather speed there's one more hill, till we can feel the sky

place my head in the stars, to see the roaring light, to see the roaring light

Take my mind running wheel, place me on that northern track

set your speed running wheel, close my coat, I feel the wind

You say they'll take me there, for times one day

then I'll find where I've been, just dreaming in the woods, just dreaming in the woods

    Why Was it Time

Why Was it Time-music and lyrics Jon Clark © 2011 Row North Music

If you go before I can tell you good-bye, show me a sign I can see

If you're on the right cloud or drifting alone, wondering where am I now

Will time change you, or keep you the same

Who makes the rules now and then

Who breaks the rules now and then

Who will show you what was never found out, from all your dreams undone

Lis-ten to the reason that no one explained, why was it time to go

Will time change you, or keep you the same

Who makes the rules now and then

Who breaks the rules now and then

Will time change you, or keep you the same

Who makes the rules now and then

Who breaks the rules now and then

When you close your eyes will you still see this face, or a whole new picture show

Is the past no matter to wonder on now, look will I still make you smile

Will time change you, or keep you the same

Who makes the rules now and then

Who breaks the rules now and then

Does the mark you left just get covered in dust, or blown away like fine sand

Mov-ing to one place or another in time, gathering speed as you go

Will time change you, or keep you the same

Who makes the rules now and then

Who breaks the rules now and then

Who makes the rules now and then

Who breaks the rules now and then

    Teacher

Teacher-music and lyrics Jon Clark © 2011 Row North Music

Somebody told me not to lie

and I listen most the time

    but when changes are slow'n

down for no reason or rhyme…

You explain why it's been like this

    Many years just the same

    How do people like scaring

friends when we're all to blame

We got bombs hidden in our yard

    Mother Bear's got them too

It's a silly game we play

    in the hands of few

One day this will be yours my son

Look and pray it's still here

Take your ground and hold it

close so it's not to fear

Crazy man put that suitcase down

    broken code there it goes

Flash of bright before the dark

Are we sane no one knows

    Little Mike

Little Mike-music and lyrics Jon Clark © 2011 Row North Music

Little Mike pushes papers onto the floor

folds his arms and wonders why

tease the girls and make their heads turn around

Mary Sue he makes her cry

What a problem this disruption you know

how to deal with little Mike

Shall we make him an example to see

fix his wagon take his bike

Raise your hand child, raise your hand

Tell the teacher your no fool

Close your book now, close your book

To the corner, on a stool

Mr Jensen said he's tried everything

Throws his arms up in despair

Take this boy and sent him up to the home

Will they break him I don't care

He's just trouble that this world does not need

Is there something I don't see?

What's the use of taking time with this boy

Grown up man he'll never be

Raise your hand child, raise your hand

Tell the teacher your no fool

Close your book now, close your book

To the corner, on a stool

Bet you'll grow up to be gov'ner some day

    Politician of the state

Take a pen and wink your eye, sign a law

Wouldn't that just take the cake

Run for president of our country thee

    Chief Commander in his chair

Then you'll scare us all half out of our wits

I don't know whose worse for wear

Raise your hand child, raise your hand

Tell the teacher your no fool

Close your book now, close your book

To the corner, on a stool…To the corner, on a stool

    Two-Stroke Stan

Two-Stroke Stan-music and lyrics Jon Clark © 2011 Row North Music

If you lose your way, find that old log’n road

One long skid through the slash

Straight down the run, take the ridge like he said

Brings you out to open sky

When you see that old Hardscrabble Road

Then you’re home, don’t you know

    Two—two stroke Stan

    Forty trees one man

    Two—two stroke Stan

Never saw it coming, never ran

    Two—two stroke Stan

    Forty trees one man

    Two—two stroke Stan

Never saw it coming, never ran

How many years, just been cut’n for a life

Yeah his daddy did it too

Take your pay when the day is done

Buy some jack to ease the pain

Sleep it off on the old Dodge seat

Wake up cold, just one boot on

    Two—two stroke Stan

    Forty trees one man

    Two—two stroke Stan

Never saw it coming, never ran

Some close calls, only one that shows

    What’s a scar without a tale

Wind that fights, stubborn pine won’t fall

Hung up luck, just for now

Turned his back on the devil’s tree

It came down the worst of all

    Two—two stroke Stan

    Forty trees one man

    Two—two stroke Stan

Never saw it coming, never ran

In the wind, you can still hear that saw

    Howl’in through the stand’n wood

Some may find, where that same old tree

Left be-hind just turned to dust

Take it back, then it all returns

laid him down to start again

    Two—two stroke Stan

    Forty trees one man

    Two—two stroke Stan

Never saw it coming, never ran

Never saw it coming, never ran

Never saw it coming, never ran

    Last Furrow

Last Furrow-music and lyrics Jon Clark © 2011 Row North Music

Trampled fields of worn out crops

    rusted wheels, the turning stops

    Broken loans a dollar bill

dirt and dust, the farm stands still

    Tired fence, blown open gate

where to go, is this ones fate

Thankless work, last furrow set upon his brow

    empty barn, ghostly cold

No more chores, the banker calls

    auction block, the hammer falls

    Breakfast waits on morning sun

what's the rush, why should he run

    It's a strain what's left to show

    forty years, long time ago

Thankless work, last furrow set upon his brow

    empty barn, ghostly cold

    City ways no children's call

guess that's best, won't see him fall

way out back, behind the shed

with the gun, both barrels dead

    scattered crows, the echo sounds

best be left, just out of bounds

Thankless work, last furrow set upon his brow

    empty barn, ghostly cold

    Snake Killer

Snake Killer-music and lyrics Jon Clark © 2011 Row North Music

Charg'n down a trail, got that look in his eye, he's a roadrunner

Beat'n down that dust, where the sun don't let up, he's a roadrunner

and he's tired of kill'n, them snakes he don't mind

it's just a profession, one of a kind

Movin' out those legs, down the road straight and wide, he's a roadrunner

Passin' by them rocks, just a blur we can't see, he's a roadrunner

and he stops by a cactus, one button or two?

there's snakes all around him, "how do you do"

"I don't know if you know, that I kill things like you, I'm a roadrunner"

"Tell me can't you see, that I'm fast please believe, I'm a roadrunner"

but those snakes kept on comin', slow they may be

they'll challenge any bird, on pe-yo-te

Charg'n down a trail, got that look in his eye, he's a roadrunner

Beat'n down that dust, where the sun don't let up, he's a roadrunner

and he's tired of kill'n, them snakes he don't mind

it's just a profession, one of a kind

    What's One More

What's One More-music and lyrics Jon Clark © 2011 Row North Music

    More or less fine…

cold hard bed, my eyes won't close

one more summer, brings me home…brings me home

wishing time, just finds the way…just finds the way

to return, and see your smile…and see your smile

will the garden, be as bright…be as bright

    More or less fine…

beggar's bridge, don't look so good

seen too many, shoes that fall, shoes that fall

empty darkness, takes you in…it takes you in

light a smoke, and turn away…just turn away

may the fog, help cover up…help cover up

    More or less fine…

just this note, to ease your thoughts

    a hundred stories, I won't tell…no I won't tell

left unsaid, turn off the light…turn off the light

no one's home, so let's move on…so let's move on

capt'n says, "now clean em out"… now clean em out

    More or less fine…

what's one more, no one will count

In my head, just had a thought…just had a thought

    It's your number, should I call…should I call

    take a message, no one's here…no one's here

never mind, I'll see you then… I'll see you then

    I Didn't Know

    I Didn't Know-music and lyrics Jon Clark © 2011 Row North Music

You asked me one thing that I don't know

a question worth saving for that big last show

don't spend it on me if you got any sense

take it to heaven cause you'll need a defense

    I'm sorry… I didn't know…it's just that you seemed so sure

Maybe you're think'n that it's all the same

definite answers in an indefinite game

I see no trouble in your ask'n why

but don't look at me cause I'm not gonna lie

    I'm sorry… I didn't know…it's just that you seemed so sure

All's I can tell you is that what I see

goes round in circles sort of naturally

one man has started when another man's done

sowing his seeds and feeling glad for the sun

    I'm sorry… I didn't know…it's just that you seemed so sure

So if you think now that I can't see

maybe you're right cause no one told me

open that mind let the lessons flow

the reason you're living is the reason you go

    I'm sorry… I didn't know…it's just that you seemed so sure

    I'm sorry… I didn't know…it's just that you seemed so sure

NOTES
"One Long Skid" is a collection of songs about the delicate balance in life,
staying upright, falling down, getting up, or staying down.
We're either in control of our skid, enjoying the ride,
or spinning out of control into the dark abyss.
Sometimes our final destination is in the hand of others.
At best we can survive the ride with only a few scars, and plenty of tales to tell.
Hold on tight when you have to and let go when nothing is in your way.
Keep on Skidin'…
